Extraordinary contribution and services to Ethiopia’s health sector

Dr. Wuleta Lemma is Director of Center for Global Health Equity (CGHE), School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Tulane University USA. She is a Tropical Medicine expert working for the last 25 years mostly on HIV/AIDS, Malaria, MNCH and Communicable Diseases. In the last number of years, Dr. Wuleta has been involved in Health projects in more than 20 countries in Africa, The Caribbean and Europe.
During the past couple years, She had conducted research on endemic health problems, Human Resource for Health (HRH), Innovative Medical Education, Behavioral Surveillance on high risk populations in a number of countries; contributed to research on Health outcomes of countries of the Horn of Africa and Health System Strengthen in Ethiopia.
Currently, Dr. Wuleta leads one of the largest project at the Center, collaborate work with Federal Ministry of Health of Ethiopia (FMOH) and The US Center for Dis-ease Control.
Dr. Wuleta was instrumental for starting the 1st MSc pro-gram in M&E of Health Programs at Jimma University, Ethiopia in collaboration with experts from ESNP-FIOCRUZ Brazil. The course is the 1st of its kind in Af-rica is geared to build local capacity in evidence based policy making and 1st Bio-statistics and Health informatics MSc program at Mekele University again the first combine graduate course in Africa. To date more than 180 Master students have graduated from these programs and providing services in the health sector in the country.
Dr. Wuleta led a team from Tulane to support FMOH in the development of Human Resource Strategy-20/20. For the last number of years, Dr. Wuleta has been working with the Ministries of Health and Education of Ethiopia to design and implement an “innovative four year medical curriculum”.
In the last couple of years, Dr. Wuleta has been leading the design and deployment of e-and mhealth solutions to improve health monitoring and patient care in resource limited settings. The various solutions (EMR, EHMIS/PHEM, HRIS, and mHealth for Disease Surveillance, eCHIS etc) have been implemented in more than 2500 health institutions. Dr. Wuleta also teaches and advises Masters and PhD students.
Therefore, Ministry of Health honors Dr. Wuleta for her extraordinary contribution and services to Ethiopia’s health sector.
